Metabolic Balance first began in the 1980s with Dr. Wolf Funfack from the notition of how to stay in and maintain good health. Dr Funfack, was an internal medicine specialist with a particular interest in nutrition, weight management, and metabolic health. Driven by his clinical experience, Dr Funfack recognised the limitations of generic diets and set out to design a system rooted in biochemistry and food science.
At that time, his wife Birgit Funfack was training to become a naturopath and offered new insights, such as viewing all physical processes as individual and influenced by many factors. She and Dr Funfack began sharing ideas and experimenting with small lifestyle changes to observe their impact on health and wellbeing. To further develop their theories, they involved Birgit’s sister, Silvia Bürkle, a food technologist, whose unique perspective on foods and their effects greatly enriched their discussions.
These events marked the beginning of Metabolic Balance and the Metabolic Balance software system, which analyses blood values alongside personal health history and preferences to create tailored nutrition plans. This approach bridged medical science and practical nutrition, offering practitioners a powerful, evidence-based tool to support their clients.
Since its beginnings in Germany, Metabolic Balance has grown into a globally recognised program, now practised in over 35 countries worldwide. Thousands of practitioners – including doctors, nutritionists, naturopaths, and health coaches – have been trained to deliver it, making it one of the most established and respected personalised nutrition systems internationally.
In January 2025, Cherry Wills took over the management of Metabolic Balance in the United Kingdom, marking a full-circle moment in her journey with the programme.
Cherry first became a certified coach in 2012 while working in London as a Clinical Nutritional Therapist. After relocating to Australia in 2013, Cherry built a thriving private nutrition practice, and in 2017, she became the CEO of Metabolic Balance Australia and New Zealand, where she has led and grown the programme ever since.
Following the passing of Gloria Parfitt in November 2024, who previously managed Metabolic Balance UK, Cherry stepped in to ensure the program’s continued growth and success.
Now, Cherry divides her time between the UK and Australia/New Zealand, overseeing the support, training, and mentorship of Metabolic Balance coaches across all three regions. She is passionate about empowering practitioners and clients alike, celebrating every success along the way.
